PSHE & Relationships
Personal, Social and Health and Economic Education (PSHE)
PSHE plays an important role in helping our children grow into happy, healthy, confident and caring individuals who are equipped to flourish in the world around them. We want our pupils to understand themselves, recognise and manage their feelings, build positive relationships, make informed and safe choices and feel prepared for the changes and challenges ahead. Rooted in our Christian vision, ‘Let your light shine,’ and our values of kindness, respect and perseverance, we encourage every child to recognise their own worth and treat others with dignity.
Our PSHE curriculum is organised around three core themes: Relationships, Living in the Wider World and Health and Wellbeing. Through a question-based approach, children explore age-appropriate topics including friendships, families, identity, mental health, physical health, online safety, personal safety, money and future aspirations. Learning is carefully sequenced from Reception to Year 6, building on previous knowledge and revisiting key themes with increasing depth and maturity. In Key Stage 2, our Melva programme further supports emotional literacy and self-regulation.
Relationships and Health Education (RHE)
Relationships and Health Education is a statutory part of the primary curriculum and is taught through our PSHE lessons. Children learn about families and friendships, keeping safe online and offline, looking after their physical and mental wellbeing and towards the end of Key Stage 2, the changes that come with puberty. We reflect the range of families in our community so that every child sees their own family valued. Staff use the correct names for parts of the body, because this helps children keep themselves safe and tell a trusted adult if something is wrong. We do not teach sex education beyond what is set out in the science curriculum. Our approach is shaped by the principles of the Church of England Charter for faith sensitive and inclusive relationships education.
We are committed to ensuring that every child feels valued, included and able to participate fully. Lessons provide a safe and supportive environment for discussion, reflection and asking questions, with teaching adapted to meet individual needs, including those of pupils with SEND. Learning is enriched through links with other curriculum areas, collective worship and everyday school life. We work in partnership with parents and carers, who are welcome to view our teaching materials.
